Westport Island's Small Harbor Grant denied
Westport Island will not be building a ramp and float for the jetty at Wright Landing any time soon. The town’s grant application request for $65,280 to built a ramp and float off the jetty on the Back River, with the town’s match of 20 percent, was not one of the 18 projects selected by Maine Department of Transportation.
The proposal was to build a 40 feet long and 4 feet wide ramp, with a float of 10 feet by 20 feet, built on the south end of the jetty.
According to a letter the town received from Dan Stewart, MDOT Small Improvement Program Manager, MDOT received approximately 46 applications requesting over $5 million in funding. The state only had approximately $1 million to distribute in funds.
“Your project may be successful in acquiring future funding assistance, depending upon available funds, and other statewide projects,” Stewart said in his letter.
The town received grant money in 2010 to build the jetty.
Westport Island centenarian writes thank you note
Westport Island summer resident Priscilla Caskin, who recently celebrated her 100 birthday, sent a thank you note to the selectmen for their contribution to her celebration.
“I have loved Westport Island and its people for many years, especially our North End,” she said in her note. “We are so fortunate in so many ways, one of which is Clough Point Nature Way. It is indeed beautiful, and we feel so privileged to have it so near and so dear.”
“Please pass my thanks on to my fellow islanders,” she wrote.
Westport Island selectmen George Richardson, Jr., Gerald Bodmer and Ross Norton presented Caskin with a bouquet of flowers and joined friends and family members at her party on the island.
