Two vehicle accident in Edgecomb
No one was hurt when a car and trailer truck had a “potentially deadly collision” October 18 in Edgecomb, authorities said.
Route 27 was shut down for about half an hour while the 2011 Hyundai station wagon Ivan DeGroote, 23, of Boothbay Harbor had been driving was pulled from an embankment, according to a press release from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department.
The car entered Route 27 from Cross Road just after 2 p.m., as a 2007 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer truck, towing an empty flatbed trailer, was northbound on Route 27, Sgt. Jason Nein wrote. Michael Piela, 47, of Lisbon was driving the truck, the release states.
DeGroote “failed to see” the truck, the release continues. “Mr. Piela attempted to avoid a collision by braking however both vehicles collided in the travel lane. (The car) traveled forward and went over a steep embankment where it came to rest.” The truck's driver pulled over and stopped along Route 27.
The Edgecomb Fire Department and Wiscasset Ambulance Service went to the scene. No injuries were reported.
“Driver inattention/distraction and/or fatigue on the part of Mr. DeGroote is considered the primary cause of this potentially deadly collision,” Nein wrote. “Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and neither had been using alcohol.”
No charges are expected, according to the release.
