Alna talks roads, pantry
Work is ahead for a few Alna roads. Selectmen Sept. 25 supported Road Commissioner Mike Trask's plans, including shimming Dock Road in the low spots, "so that the water runs where it needs to," Trask said. Repaving the whole road would be "huge money, which we can't afford," he said. "So this is the best option ..."
First Selectman Nick Johnston confirmed via email, the Dock Road work is estimated at $27,000; paving Dock Road Extension, about $17,000; and paving Rabbit Path Road from Route 218 to the power lines, $52,030. "This is to repair (Rabbit Path) from damage caused by heavy equipment used to work on the power lines. The money for it is provided by the company that did the power line work," the email read.
Johnston said money left from last year's roads budget will fund both the Dock Road and Dock Road Extension projects.
In the meeting at the town office and over Zoom, Johnston said a board vote was not needed and the agenda item was "just to make sure everybody knows what's going on."
"Technically, I'm not supposed to spend money without your permission," Trask said. "So, this is to get your permission."
"You got it," Second Selectman Steve Graham said.
"Go ahead," Johnston agreed.
In a work session afterward, the selectboard and Alna food pantry volunteers discussed possibly surveying residents to help inform the pantry's efforts and to make sure residents know about the pantry; also discussed was keeping a box at the town office for donations of goods to the pantry.
