Bigelow breaks a sweat
Participants took to the streets of Boothbay Harbor May 15 to raise awareness about colorectal cancer during Bigelow Laboratory's 10th annual Fun Run & Walk fundraiser.
Bigelow hosts the event in honor of its former executive director, Graham Shimmield, who was instrumental in the creation of Bigelow's marine research and education campus in East Boothbay. Shimmield died after a long battle with colon cancer in 2016.
All donations go to LincolnHealth for cancer screenings and treatments for community members who can't afford them. The run drew about 13 attendees and raised about $500. Since the event's inception, Bigelow has raised $8,000 for the cause.
A previously in-organization event, Bigelow expanded it in 2025 and invited local organizations to attend. This year, it welcomed Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Boothbay Region Land Trust, Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, the local LincolnHealth office and the YMCA.
The trail consisted of a 5k run, or a shorter walk, through Boothbay Harbor’s downtown and east side. The winners were Bigelow employees Kevin Posman and Christoph Aeppli. In honor of the achievement, the pair added their names to the long list on Bigelow’s inflatable trophies.
