Catching up
Sometimes you fall behind on things you want to accomplish. This column is one of them.
I have been meaning to congratulate Katie Sibley, Bill Tompkins and Don Brewer for being chosen to enter the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame next month. The ceremony is Oct. 19 at the Rockland Elks Club.
Let’s start with Bill. He graduated from Boothbay Region High School before I even reached ninth grade but I do remember seeing those Seahawk baseball teams play on what became Sherman Field. I remember his tenacity and determination on the field and it only made sense that he would become a coach, a great coach, amassing a staggering record of 561 wins vs. 264 losses during his days in Massachusetts.
Katie was a basketball star even before she got to high school. I remember seeing her compete against the boys in pick-up games at the YMCA, and she shined in elementary school. I had a chance to coach her while I was the girls junior varsity coach at BRHS but she was too good to be considered a j.v. player. She went on to lead the Lady Seahawks all four years of her career, named a first-team conference all star all four years, and is the school’s all-time leading scorer. Talk about tenacity? She had it from day one on the basketball court. Congratulations Katie.
Don played for the rival Redskins of Wiscasset but he has always been a great person to talk to whenever we sat together at any basketball games. I remember his teams crushed the Seahawks in the early 70s and luckily, I missed playing against him by one year. He led his team to the state championship games in ‘72 and ‘73 but lost to the mighty Jonesport teams both years. Congratulations Don. Let’s reminisce again sometime.
