Edgecomb seeking new tax collector
Edgecomb selectmen will hold an emergency meeting Tuesday (Aug. 26) to begin the search for a new tax collector. On Aug. 19, Tax Collector Rebecca Brewer informed selectmen she had taken a full-time position at the Wiscasset town office, and her last day, as tax collector, is Aug. 28.
Brewer has worked for 5.5 years as the town's part-time elected tax collector.
In other action, Code Enforcement Officer Marian Anderson reported the Pioneer Motel is attempting to regain their lodging license. She mentioned an improved septic system and a separate laundry facility are among the major items on the state's inspection list. "I've already received a few calls from interested buyers. The owner is working with a Realtor," she said.
Later, selectmen appointed Anderson as the municipal health officer.
The Edgecomb Historical Society may have found a home for a historic blacksmith shop. In 2013, the society began "The Smitty Project" to locate a place for storing relics from a 19th century blacksmith shop.
According to EHS, the intact shop dates back to the 1880s and belonged to an ancestor of Moses Davis, an original Edgecomb settler. The shop is filled with tools, a fire and cooling pit, chimney, an anvil’s block, and a pair of large intact bellows.
As Boucher explained the society's efforts to find a place for the blacksmith shop, Selectman George Chase suggested a 2.1-acre town-owned parcel across the street from the town hall. "That might be the location," Chase said. Boucher liked the idea and will suggest it to the historical society.
Selectmen next regularly scheduled meeting is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2 in the conference room.
