Group 1 champions crowned at Wiscasset Speedway

Unfortunately, summer has flown by in the blink of an eye and we are nearing the conclusion of the 2025 race season at Wiscasset Speedway. Team Wiscasset began their 3-event season sendoff on Saturday, hosting an action-packed program that included the Brackett’s Market 4-Cylinder Pros, Kennebec Equipment Rental Thunder 4 Minis, Davis Erector Group 207 Crate Modifieds, the visiting NELCAR Legends and double features for the Gosline Insurance Group Super Streets and Norm’s Used Cars Pro Stocks.
Chaos erupted in the opening laps of the first Super Street feature as Bill Harnish nearly went airborne after making contact with Andy Kaherl, causing the field to scatter. Josh Hall maintained command on the restart but defending champion Bubba Pelton was on the move, making his way to Hall’s outside door on lap 9 and overtaking the lead the following lap. Pelton sailed into the sunset as James Osmond and Noah Haggett followed, completing the podium.
Jamie Wright and points leader Nick Hinkley collided on the initial lap of the first Pro Stock feature, collecting Shane Lane. Larry Gelinas and Matt Beers went head-to-head for the lead on the restart, but Logan Melcher dove under both drivers on lap 4, stealing the top spot away. Kelly Moore found his stride in the laps that followed, making his way to Melcher’s inside on lap 10. Moore pulled away with the lead and never looked back, securing the victory over Logan Melcher and Nick Hinkley.
Carson Bellows won the qualifying heat race in the Thunder 4 Minis and took off with the early lead in the feature as drivers went 3-wide for position behind him. Zach Audet and Pete McCollett made contact early into the race, causing McCollett to spin. This catapulted Kyle Willette into the runner-up spot as the race remained green. Bellows held off both Kyle Willette and Zach Audet in the closing laps of the race, capturing his first career victory. Audet was crowned the division champion and is looking to make Maine racing history this season as he goes for 5 championship titles between the three race tracks he competes at regularly.
Rookie Ryan Neal held onto the early advantage in the 30-lap feature for the 207 Crate Modifieds. Meanwhile, John Ricci was quickly gaining ground, making his way to Neal’s outside on lap 13 to challenge for the top spot. The two drivers remained side-by-side until Ricci pulled ahead with the edge on lap 17. John Ricci sealed the deal, tying Zach Audet’s track record of 6 wins in a single division over the course of one season. Ryan Neal finished second, his top career finish, while Ryan Phillips was crowned the inaugural 207 Crate Modified champion.
Brandon Labelle hopped out to the early lead in the 25-lap feature for the NELCAR Legends. Chaos was on the horizon as Ryan Rice and Adam Warnock made contact on lap 13, sending Warnock hard into the turn 1 wall. Warnock climbed out under his own power and Labellle maintained command on the restart as Jake Kelley and Dave Stone III filed in behind him. Labelle was able to hold off the competition as the laps wound down, scoring his first career victory at Wiscasset Speedway.
Veteran Mark Lucas took off with the early advantage in the second feature for the Super Streets while a 3-way battle for second ensued behind him. Multiple spins on lap 14 resulted in a caution and Mark Lucas powered ahead on the restart as the field stacked up behind him once again. Kevin Sherman backed into the turn 1 wall on lap 18, resulting in a quick caution. Mark Lucas held strong on the restart, fending off Andy Kaherl (top career finish) and Noah Haggett for his first win in 4 years. Noah Haggett was crowned the division champion, celebrating with his friends and family in Victory Lane post-race.
Point leader Jaxson Moreside’s day got off to a rough start as he took a spin on the initial lap of the 4-Cylinder Pro race, resulting in a caution. Jay Plummer pulled ahead on the restart, but Darren Miranda and Chassidy Shorty made hard contact, resulting in an immediate red flag. Plummer maintained command on the restart, but Adam Taylor was on the move, overtaking the top spot. Adam Taylor held onto it from there, securing the feature victory while Jay Plummer and Jackson Moreside rounded out the top 3. Moreside captured the championship and was showered by water in Victory Lane following the impressive comeback performance.
The night concluded with a 40-lap feature for the Pro Stocks. Matt Beers took off with the early advantage but Andy Gilbert quickly made way to his door, overtaking the top spot on lap 7. Stephen Chicoine was on the move during the second half of the race, claiming the runner-up spot on lap 28. As the leaders pulled away, there was a door-to-door battle for third as the laps wound down, with Kelly Moore securing the position. Andy Gilbert picked up the victory, the first of his career, while Stephen Chicoine and Kelly Moore rounded out the podium. Nick Hinkley was able to maintain his points lead, securing the division championship.
Saturday was a night of many firsts and newfound champions at Wiscasset Speedway. More champions will be crowned this Saturday, Sept. 27 with Group 2 Championship Night plus the 13th annual Strictly Shootout, presented by Thayer’s Automotive.
