Jailer's wife's cookbook inspires dinner for prospective LCHA volunteers
Curious about volunteering at Wiscasset’s Old Jail? Join us for a special dinner to learn about the site and upcoming opportunities to get involved!
The stewardship committee for the historic Lincoln County Jail on Federal Street invites community members interested in volunteering to a special dinner on Sunday, May 3. Inspired by newly discovered recipes from the wife of a 19th-century jailer, the evening will feature dishes prepared as they once were in the jailer’s home kitchen, where meals were cooked daily for those held at the jail, offering a filling meal that may differ from what you might expect.
This gathering is a great opportunity to learn more about volunteer roles at the Old Jail, which is open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from June through September. Volunteers serve as greeters and tour guides, helping bring the jail’s stories to life. No prior experience is needed, and the time commitment is minimal, just one afternoon per month.
“I became a volunteer at the Old Jail shortly after moving to Wiscasset 15 years ago,” said Christine Hopf-Lovette. “At first I was hesitant, but after shadowing an experienced guide I realized that visitors are happy to learn as little or as much detail as you are able to share.”
Anyone interested in the history of the jail and the people who lived and worked there is warmly invited to attend and encouraged to bring a friend. To RSVP and receive the dinner location and additional details, email lchaprograms@gmail.com
LCHA will host a separate docent training May 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Maine Tasting Center. This session will include a presentation by a professional tour guide, along with an introduction to the policies, procedures, and engaging stories that will make volunteering easy, fun and effective.
All prospective volunteers are welcome to attend the training, whether or not they join the dinner, but advance registration is required for planning purposes. To register for the training and receive additional details, email lchaprograms@gmail.com
