Local students win writing awards

The Scholastic Writing Awards-Maine Region recognized 10 students in Nancie Atwell’s writing class at Edgecomb’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) for Excellence in Writing. Two of them, Parker Elkins of Edgecomb and Helena Solorzano of Alna, were also awarded prestigious national Gold Keys by the Scholastic Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Elkins was recognized for a memoir and a trilogy of poems and Solorzano for a personal essay.
Noelle Timberlake of Southport, and Charlotte Collins of Woolwich earned honors for their poetry, as did Xander Bartone and Claire Dauge-Roth, both of Bath, and Teddy Matel of Round Pond.
Bartone was also recognized for an exemplary personal essay and a work of flash fiction, as was Emily Sanborn of Alna. An essay by Brunswick’s Payton Sullivan was celebrated, as was a personal essay and trilogy of poems by Wallace Jackson of Woolwich.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the gold standard for recognizing the creative achievements of U.S. students in grades 7-12. Awards will be distributed in a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 31, which will also be webcast at 6 p.m. that evening.
