Maine Film Office Launches Film in Maine Pilot Program
AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Film Office is launching a one-time Film in Maine Reimbursement grant program created to stimulate film and television production in Maine while supporting economic development and job creation.
Funded through the Maine Film Office, the program will provide a competitive rebate on eligible production expenses for up to two qualifying projects that film in Maine and meet program requirements. The Maine Film Office anticipates a total program budget of approximately $700,000, with a maximum incentive of up to $350,000 per project.
Eligible projects include feature films (narrative or documentary), television pilots, episodic or limited series, and digital streaming productions.
Projects must demonstrate a minimum of $1 million in Maine-based expenditures and show proof of at least 60% secured financing at the time of application.
The program provides:
- 25% reimbursement for qualifying Maine resident labor (above and below the line)
- 20% percent reimbursement for qualifying non-resident labor (above and below the line)
- 25% percent reimbursement for eligible non-payroll production expenses incurred in Maine
Projects will be reviewed through a competitive scoring process and evaluated on factors including anticipated economic benefit to Maine and alignment with the program’s goals. At least one award will be made to a project with a storyline set in Maine.
Production companies selected for the grants must submit a final expenditure report to the Maine Film Office following completion of the production. Reimbursement is based upon final production expenditures within the state of Maine.
"This pilot program allows us to support a limited number of projects in a more competitive way while continuing to emphasize local spending, workforce participation and authentic storytelling,” said Steve Lyons, director of the Maine Film Office.
