What is your vision of a senior citizen?
The next National Drug Take Back Day is this coming Saturday, April 27. The five sites in Lincoln County will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on that day. Prescription, over-the-counter and pet medications will be accepted. Needles and syringes will not be accepted. People are advised to remove or black out any names on prescription containers.
It is incredible how extensive prescription drug abuse has become. People searching for drugs will go through garbage looking for prescription containers and then try to refill them for their own use or sale. Do your part to keep others safe and the environment clean by getting rid of unwanted drugs at one of the National Drug Take Back sites.
During last week’s school vacation week the Wiscasset Community Center offered a special program for the kids. Last Friday the Senior Center got involved and some members helped the kids build birdhouses and make quilts. The children ranged in age from about six to twelve.
Carl Hewitt, Senior Center member, and Bob MacDonald, Community Center, helped the kids build the birdhouses with wood donated by Hancock Lumber. Sixteen birdhouses were completed.
The Senior Center Craft Group provided material for the quilts. Several Senior Center Craft Group members reported that some of the boys became interested in the quilts when it was pointed out that math was involved. Everyone, young and young-at-heart, boys and girls had a fun day!
What is a Senior Citizen? Who goes to Senior Centers? I’m sure you all have seen the cartoon of the 90-year-old saying, “I’m not one of them. Senior Centers are just for old people!” My vision of a Senior Citizen is an energetic dynamic person who enjoys living and is always looking to learn and experience new things. What is your vision? Let me know.
Like many of you, I, too, followed the events of last week’s marathon bombings and eventual capture of the bombers. Of all the comments that were made, the one that struck me was, “Life is for the living. We learn from events, take action and then move on.” There were so many that took action or did their job or showed concern. It is those efforts that make it possible for life to go on.
