Wiscasset and Boothbay slug it out
It didn't take long for the Wiscasset High School girls varsity softball team to strike on Friday, April 24.
It took about the same amount of time for Boothbay Region to strike back.
The two teams played in Wiscasset to open the season, and those who braved the cold were treated to a slugfest that produced a football-like score.
In the end, Wiscasset was able to hold off Boothbay and opened the season with a 23-16 victory.
Wiscasset came out early, and opened the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Boothbay, however, wasn't going to wait around.
In the top of the frame, the Seahawks (0-1) plated 10 runs to take the lead. But Wiscasset (1-0) wasn't going to wait around to get back into the game. By the second inning, the score was tied at 10, and the Wolverines built up a lead with a seven-run third. Boothbay would be held scoreless in the third, before picking up runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
But Wiscasset was able to hold on to pick up the victory.
Wolverines pitcher Charlene Reed scored four runs, while fellow starters Kayla Gordon and Stephanie Jones added three runs apiece. For Boothbay, Tori Morin scored four runs, while Mackenzie Abbott added three.
The game was originally slated to be played in Boothbay Harbor, but because of water on the field, the game was moved to Wiscasset. The two teams will play again May 26.
