Wiscasset baseball charms Cobras
The start to a very busy baseball week got off on the right foot for the Wiscasset High School baseball team.
The Wolverines (2-2) rode a five-run fifth inning to shut out the Cobras (3-1) 10-0 on Monday. The Wolverines also had a five-run third inning.
Wiscasset's Tyler Bailey picked up his first win of the year by firing only 53 pitches to a typically-stout Carrabec squad. Bailey, who fanned 16 Seahawks on opening day, added seven more punch outs against the Cobras.
Matt Craig and Daren Wood each scored a pair of runs, while Logan Orr and Tyler Flavin added runs in the fifth via daring stolen bases to take the win. The game lasted a little less than an hour and a half.
The Wolverines didn't commit an error during the game, and coach Mike Bowles said the Wolverines should have some momentum after a strong all-around win.
Wiscasset will play four times from Monday, May 4, to Friday, May 8, and after Carrabec, the schedule doesn't get easier: the team faced 3-1 Lisbon on Tuesday, May 5, then traveled to Telstar (0-5) Wednesday, May 6, and caps the week against a 4-1 Dirigo squad on Friday, May 8.
Saints take advantage of errors
Wiscasset was giving St. Dom's all it could handle for a good portion of the Friday, May 1 game, but the Saints (3-1) were able to escape with a win.
Wiscasset (1-2) actually lead in the fourth inning, 7-4, but St. Dom's was able to capitalize on Wiscasset errors to plate five runs in the fourth, then two-apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to finish with a 13-7 win.
Wiscasset second baseman Brycson Grover finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored while center fielder Daren Wood went 2 for 3 with a run.
Wiscasset Softball falls to St. Dom’s, Oak Hill
The Wiscasset High School girls varsity softball team wasn’t able to ride the wave after a thrilling 23-17 opening day victory over Boothbay Region; the Wolverines dropped a pair of games to Mountain Valley Conference rivals.
The Wolverines (1-2) lost Wednesday, April 29 to Oak Hill in a 26-0 slugfest, then fell Friday, May 1 to St. Dom’s by a score of 18-6.
But the Wolverines were able to make some noise Monday, May 4 against a tough Carrabec squad.
With Carrabec leading by double digits for most of the game, Wiscasset mounted a third inning rally that saw the Wolverines halve the score to 20-10. But, the Cobras (2-3) were able to hold on for the 22-10 win.
Despite the three losses, Wiscasset is still in the hunt for a playoff spot in Western Class D; the Wolverines are in eighth place in the league.
The team played Lisbon on May 5 and will travel to Telstar on May 6.
