At Woolwich selectmen's Aug. 5 meeting, Selectman Jason Shaw said he’d been in touch with Maine Department of Transportation officials who confirmed they’d meet with the selectboard to discuss a safety audit at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. The meeting will be in the municipal building’s hearing room. First responders and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department are invited to attend.

Shaw added, state road improvements planned for Nequasset and George Wright roads won’t be getting underway until the fall of 2027. The work includes upgrading the traffic signal on Route One. 

There will be live music, tours and free food this Saturday, Aug. 8 during the return of Woolwich Day. The popular event held annually for many years gets underway at 11 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m. on grounds of the town office on Nequassset Road.

Shaw will man the grill taking orders for hot dogs and hamburgers to go along with cold soda, bottled water, ice cream and cotton candy. The popular Montsweagers will provide their unique blend of folk music. Baked goods will be for sale and the historical society will open the doors for guided tours through the farmhouse museum. Members of the ambulance department will be offering free blood pressure screenings and first responders are planning children’s activities.

In his monthly report, Fire Chief Shaun Merrill said the fire department responded to 19 calls in July that included a watercraft accident. There were four brush fires, three motor vehicle accidents and a fuel spill.

There were 28 calls for ambulance service in July. Among them were mutual aid calls to Dresden and Georgetown. EMS Director Danny Evarts said 27 patients were seen and 17 transported; MC1 was called 12 times. “We will hold a training session on the use of the Lifepak 15 and cardiac rhythm recognition" Aug. 25, wrote Evarts in his report.

Road Commissioner Jack Shaw told the selectboard paving and mowing on the road shoulders is finished for the summer.

Selectmen appointed Tegan Rand, the town's tax collector, to the Special Events and Communications committees. They also renewed a liquor license for Taste of Maine Restaurant.  

Nomination papers for two seats on the selectboard and one on the Regional School Unit 1 Board of Directors are available at the town office. The deadline for returning them is Sept. 3. Incumbent selectmen Allison Hepler and Jason Shaw are each seeking reelection for another three-year term. Both have taken out and returned nomination papers. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Before the start of their next regular meeting, selectmen will meet with the planning board to discuss changes to town ordinances.
