On April 29, I attended an open town meeting to review a presentation on Wiscasset Public Schools presented by Kim Andersson and to vote on sections of the school budget. This budget was compiled through many, revisions over many meetings, by the Wiscasset School Committee. We are grateful for their diligence and commitment. We appreciate Dr. Andersson’s overview of all that is provided in our small schools in our small town. It’s quite a task, and the art of a School Administrator to seek to meet the educational needs of so many different learners.

We are writing to strongly voice our family’s concern to MaineHealth’s leadership and to alert the people of the Boothbay region that yet another vital service in our community has been taken away without warning.

While attending a Wound Care appointment at MaineHealth Primary Care in Boothbay Harbor, we were informed that effective immediately, toenail care would no longer be offered and if we wanted to continue this service for our 98-year-old mother, we would have to travel to the MaineHealth MilesCampus in Damariscotta. This treatment is covered by Medicare and is essential to

Home repairs are inevitable—whether from everyday wear and tear or unexpected damage. But when you’re looking for help, the wrong contractor can make matters worse. Some promise quick, low-cost fixes, then deliver poor work, damage your property, or disappear before the job is done.

Imagine if you can, a 118-foot, 12,000-pound tree lying on the ground with all sorts of branches dangling from the top one third of its length. Now, visualize lifting that tree from the ground, by its top, to a totally airborne vertical position. Our corrupt and partisan supreme court has gutted the long standing Voting Rights Act of 1965, an act that made it possible for millions of voters to go to the polls who had been previously denied. This ruling has opened the door to racially motivated gerrymandering across the south. The effectiveness of racial gerrymandering is most evident in Texas where whites make up only 40% of the population yet over 60% of their congressional delegation is white.

The Boothbay Region Garden Club hosted the Medomak District Annual Meeting on Monday, May 4th at the Bigelow Laboratories for Ocean Sciences’ new auditorium. The facility is so special and in our neighborhood. All our members enjoyed the auditorium and the whole facility.

On June 9th, Wiscasset voters will decide whether to approve a school budget of more than $11 million dollars.  As a retired teacher, I support education. However, there are very serious issues with the education being provided to Wiscasset students and throwing money at the problem will not correct what is wrong.

The problem is not that we spend too little. We already spend 35% more per student than the state average and yet, Wiscasset’s middle and high school students perform well below the state average in math, science and language arts.

In 2024, the Legislature passed, and the Governor signed, L.D. 2104, An Act to Amend the Charter of the Wiscasset Water District. The bill did several important things, which were:

1. It includes the Town of Edgecomb in the Wiscasset Water District subject to a referendum vote in the Town of Wiscasset and the Town of Edgecomb.

2. It amends the provisions of the charter governing the board of trustees of the district to include a trustee who is a legal voter of the Town of Edgecomb.
